    Alexie tells a sad and compelling story here. I guess you would say that the main character has two families–the biological family that he was born into and the street family that he has amongst the homeless Native Americans in Spokane. One thing I noticed is that all of the Indians in the story shared the little they had with the others. I also feel that the police officer who pulls the narrator off the train tracks is part of his family as well. The two men seem to enjoy an easy friendship and the cop shows an unusual amount of concern for the well-being of the narrator.
